Nature: 2, Internets: 0
In trying to protect my garden from pests this year, I thoroughly researched (googled) easy and chemical-free deterrents. The two most feasible were also the most fun: aluminum foil and marigolds. Apparently the aluminum foil would scare off pests with it’s shininess and the marigolds are stinky to furry things. I liked the idea because who doesn’t want to plant stinky flowers and much like a crow, I’m a fan of all things shiny.
Unfortunately the internets have failed me, and squirrel after squirrel have not only scampered through my garden…but they climb right through the fence with all the aluminum foil to do so! I’ve chased several away and they just hop through that aluminum foil gauntlet like…something that squirrels do not fear. At all. My only solace is that my fencing looks like art. (some have said “kindergarten art” but to those people I say, “art is art!”)
As for the marigolds, I only planted them this morning, but they already fell down on the job as I watched a raccoon prance right between them tonight. Actually, I first watched the raccoon sit above me in a tree while I watered the plants (quickly!) and then after I went inside he climbed down (through the aluminum foil fence! argh!) and then right between the marigold plants. Didn’t care a bit.
Why is google failing me?

Kitty rack
Hunter’s new favorite place to sleep is on the shelf where I keep my shoes. Actually, not on the shelf but on the actual shoes. I’m not exactly sure what about this appeals to her, but since it’s not a terribly destructive habit, I’m not going to try and stop her.
First harvest!
I picked spinach from my garden today! And added it to a salad! And ate it! I grew this spinach from a seed! (Yes, I know that people have done this before me…for, you know, centuries…I’m still inordinately proud of myself) Yay!

Overrun! Gardening Update
As you can see, the amount of plants in my room reached ridiculous levels. Michigan’s bipolar weather went back and forth from sunny and 70’s to overnight freezes so it was next to impossible to decide when to put out the plants. Finally the perfect storm of mild weather and my overwhelming desire to reclaim my room happened and I was able to move the plants outdoors.
…to this! Look how pretty! (Yes, there are close to 20 or so plants that aren’t transplanted into a larger pot in this picture…that’s because I ran out of pots. Did I mention that this project had reached a new level of ridiculousness?)
And best yet…my room is no longer pretending to be a greenhouse! Hooray!

You know that thing that I’ve been talking about?
That movie? I might have mentioned it once or twice…well, tonight it happened. And it was awesome! Seeing a movie with fans is always better and tonight’s midnight showing was seriously amazing. It was like a sea of fanboys and was the most vocal showing I’ve attended. I loved it! I told my friend that even if the movie was horrible I would have enjoyed it simply because of the audience.
Thankfully, that wasn’t an issue since this movie was amazing. Fun, well written, and explosions like crazy! So unbelievably epic! I don’t want to write any spoilers yet but it’s safe to say that this is my new favorite flick and I will enthusiastically go see it again. If it was an option I probably would have rewatched it again tonight.
Seriously…that good. Go, assemble, watch!

Happy Avengers Day! I have no idea what I’m going to do with myself until the midnight showing tonight! YAY!

Avenger All The Things!
This song makes me think of Thor and Loki. I'm so excited for the movie, but I know the two of them are going to break my heart.
We were opposites at birth
I was steady as a hammer
No one worried 'cause they knew just where I'd be
And they said you were the crooked kind
And that you'd never have no worth
But you were always gold to me
