Nature: 2, Internets: 0

In trying to protect my garden from pests this year, I thoroughly researched (googled) easy and chemical-free deterrents. The two most feasible were also the most fun: aluminum foil and marigolds. Apparently the aluminum foil would scare off pests with it’s shininess and the marigolds are stinky to furry things. I liked the idea because who doesn’t want to plant stinky flowers and much like a crow, I’m a fan of all things shiny.

Unfortunately the internets have failed me, and squirrel after squirrel have not only scampered through my garden…but they climb right through the fence with all the aluminum foil to do so! I’ve chased several away and they just hop through that aluminum foil gauntlet like…something that squirrels do not fear. At all. My only solace is that my fencing looks like art. (some have said “kindergarten art” but to those people I say, “art is art!”)

As for the marigolds, I only planted them this morning, but they already fell down on the job as I watched a raccoon prance right between them tonight. Actually, I first watched the raccoon sit above me in a tree while I watered the plants (quickly!) and then after I went inside he climbed down (through the aluminum foil fence! argh!) and then right between the marigold plants. Didn’t care a bit.

Why is google failing me?
